A new underground railway

Recently while flipping channels I came across a show on the history channel about transportation. Apparently, the history channel was taking a brief break from tirelessly celebrating 20th century US imperialist adventures around the world to look at some of the latest and forward looking transportation designs. The one that most interested me was a project called SwissMetro/EuroMetro: a proposal to create a deep tunnel underground Maglev (magnetic levitation) railroad in Switzerland and across Europe. Expected to commence initial operations as early as 2020, the project would burrow tunnels through bedrock at 100 to 200 feet below the surface and run Maglev trains with pressurized cabins through partially created vacuums in the tunnels.
